Representative Tim Burchett introduced the Protection Against Mass Surveillance Act, H.R. 9800, on July 21, 2026. It would bar federal agencies from purchasing, deploying, operating, accessing, or contracting for automated surveillance systems that track or record individuals, and would stop state and local governments from buying that technology with federal money.

Knox County, Tennessee Mayor Glenn Jacobs asked the county commission on July 27, 2026 to ban Flock cameras and let the existing contracts expire without renewal. He had signed the agreement that put them on county property. His words were that the first thing to do is cut off the funding and pause all of this. The sheriff office had planned 270 cameras on a 1.5 million dollar grant and had already spent about 800,000 dollars.
